The National Kidney Foundation Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease now recommend that we do urine protein and urine albumin ratios instead of the 24 horu urine. The 24 hour urine study correlates well with the more simple ratio. The 24 hour urine was difficult for patients collect. Furthermore, it was less accurate because folks often forgot to use the container for one of the samples. Since the study was timed, and volume and timing were critical, this made it inaccurate - and very frustrating to patients. Hats off to K/DOQI for changing the guideline.
